Hey Everyone,
Not really sure where to post these questions but I figured this location might be best. Here is the deal: I live in Central New York (stupid snow). Every club that does regular IDPA is at least an hour and a half from my house - at least the ones I can find. So a few of us at my local Rod and Gun Club petitioned the powers that be and they seem enthusiastic (although not entirely sold) about putting in some money and volunteers into helping us construct an IDPA range on the property. We can't really use the standard rifle / pistol range so as not to encroach on anyone else so we are thinking about just building a new berm and getting an area mapped out.
From asking around there are a lot of people in the vicinity of the Syracuse Area that would love for this to happen. Only problem is the two gentlemen tasked with heading up this endeavor (I am one of them) are not exactly seasoned IDPA Match Directors. In fact I have been really busy last year and only did a few informal shoots in the last 12 months. I know I would be into IDPA a lot more if there was someplace I didn't have to drive thru Hell's Half-Acre to get to.
So my questions are these:
1 - Who is my Area Coordinator and how do I contact this person?
2 - I am thinking it would be wise for those of us organizing this to attend Safety Officer school, so how would I go about that?
3 - Are there any decent layouts for an IDPA shooting area? I am an engineer and will probably do the stake, layout and survey myself for the earthwork. I just want something I can draw from.
4 - Am I being a little to overbearing trying to set-up my club to be an affiliate IDPA Club if I am not exactly Mr. IDPA? I just don't want to get in way over my head and damage the reputation of the sport because I am green.
Building props is something we can handle. I can get a hold of about a million 50 gallon blue drums, 2x4s and orange snow fence. I have the time with some others to actually construct something. I just sort of need someone who has done this before to sort of hold my hand through the process. So if there is anyone out there with some advice I am all ears.
Thanks,
-Mike
