I'd probably do better, or at least just as well, if I just "hip shot" with my left hand w/o even looking at the sights. Out of 10 rounds (9mm) I may get one dead center in the bullseye and the rest sprayed all over within an 12-18" radius. Next Match is in 10 days and I'd really like some help with things to practice, besides just pouring a ton of rounds downrange. without a specific plan that seems just expensive and not very productive or efficient. This particular stage has us shoot 6 rounds at 20 yards freehand and I'm OK with that, another 6 rounds at 10 yards "Strong hand Only".... I'm not so good at that either; then the last 6 rounds at 5 yards, "Weak Hand Only" . I'll surely lose a lot here unless I can make some real improvement between now and then. Thanks, Ken

If you're right-eye dominant, try the "half homey". Cant the gun 30 to 45 degrees to the right when holding it left-hand-only. This allows you to keep your head straight and brings the sights more in line with your dominant eye. Also, try to be sure you're not "milking" the grip... especially just when you squeeze the trigger. Jane - Expert on nothing with opinions on everything...

I'm a right handed shooter and used to be right eye dominant but due to an eye problem and laser surgery(s) I have become left eye dominant. I'm learning to present the gun and front sight to my left eye when shooting with both hands. Were their any techniques to pass along to me regarding Strong Hand (right hand) shooting. Ken

Posts: 406 (07/22/09 21:07:59) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Canting the gun in 10 degrees or so works for both hands when shooting one handed. The biggest thing it does is make for a more natural angle for your arm and chest muscles. Try this. Hold the gun in a combat stance with one hand, keeping it straight up and down. Move the straight up and down. Now cant the gun in 10 degrees or so. Now move the gun up and down along the axis you have it held (in other words up and inward, down and outward, or in even other words how the gun will recoil if you shoot it). Does the second movement feel more natural and less straining? That is why canting works, because it makes controlling and recovering from recoil easier.

Some range time, mix up 5 live and 5 dummy rounds. Fire the first 4 mags like this slowfire at 5 yards. Then 4 mags at a moderate pace at 5 yards. Tap/Rack on ALL of the dummy rounds. Koski

Koski That's one thing I forgot to mention on the other forum. Dry fire a lot every day WHO and SHO. Isolate the trigger finger. Watch the front sight and make sure it does move when the hammer falls. Can't find the time? No joke and pardon my "french" take your unloaded pistole to the crapper. Why read when you can have an effective dry fire session instead? Then in another room set up reduced size targets on the wall and practice target to target transitions SHO and WHO. It's most effective if the gun is weighted like it would be with a full or partial magazine. You can use dummy rounds in a mag or you can buy some full weight fake mags for some guns. Do not have any other magazines loaded with live rounds. Do not have any live rounds in the room where you are dry firing. Do constantly make sure you're dry firing with an empty gun. Have not had enough time to do a lot of practice but did what the time allowed. Just back from the range with a huge smile on my face .... it worked. My results were incredible compared to the depressing experiences of the past ..... now to keep practicing. just these changes alone will let me compete with confidence .... at least I won't "stink up the joint". Posts: 56 (07/23/09 15:43:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	i would also like to toss in a couple of thoughts here...i will always take whichever hand isnt holding the gun and make a fist and press it into the center of my chest...seems to help keep you balanced versus your arm just hanging at your side...also shoot weak hand strings left to right and strong hand strings right to left(if the cof allows it)...this way the gun is naturally recoiling to the next target you are going to have to engage... Remember for IDPA, most requirements for support hand shooting are under 7M. More like 4 or 5. All the things you learned about trigger and follow through? Reverse them. POA at 7. I try to shoot at least a mag of one handed shooting with both hands every time I practice. Glenn's advise is also good. Good luck. I am,,, RICK

Cant the gun a little if you must but not too much. If you ever have to shoot farther than 7 yds excessive cant is going to jack you up. In the case of multiple targets sweep the targets left to right(for a righty). Reverse your stance, this will get some more weight forward to help with recoil. Practice: Shoot some groups strong hand and support hand every practice. I expect to hit -0s consistently out to 25 yds in practice. Because of this I haven't seen a support hand target that concerned me in quite a while. Practice the presentation from low ready. Lot of time to be had there. Turn a supposed weakness into an advantage on match day. Gary Byerly

Do some strengthening exercises. Squeezing a rubber ball, or the grip exercisor that separates out the fingers. Exercise the trigger finger separate from the rest of the hand. And don't forget the wrist. The Dyna-flex ball works great, if you can figure out how to use it. Or you could just hammer some nails with the weak hand. -Rob
