I have never understood why there are different rules for LEO and military. I have seen this rule/loop hole abused at local and major matches. There is really no need to debate the finer points of the rule. The general principle of the sport should control.
We are discussing the International Defensive Pistol Association. Not the International Police Pistol Association. Not the International Military Pistol Association. Not the International Security Guard Pistol Association. Feel free to substitute your terminology.
Off duty LEOs do not carry openly. Off duty military do not carry openly. OK, someone is going to say "My cop buddy carries his duty high cap, off duty in his DOH 24/7/365." Thanks for playing.
I live in a state where anyone who can legally posess a handgun, can carry one openly. Concealed requires a permit.
Creating an exception for LEO, military, etc. is just a bad idea. Encouraging them to participate is a worthy goal. Changing the rules for them is not, unless you give them their own division. If they are in fact using their issue duty gear, they may be at a disadvantage without concealment. Then again, why would a shooting discipline turn over their rules to each and every locality? Why should a LEO be allowed to use his gear in one county, but not in the next? Why should a LEO be allowed to use his duty gear at a local match, but not at the neighboring state match?
Exceptions don't create or save bad rules.
This thread proves that the rule is not consistently applied and needs to be eliminated.
