Jose, HELP ME with the rulebook on dropping the hammer utilizing an empty magazine. If I go that route, I would like to be able to do it by the letter of the rule. Could you get me the page number? I would just like to keep the range safe and not make the SO nervous. "Paint a magazine orange or blue. Insert painted mag. Slide down hammer down. Colored mag goes back in "special" pocket. Interesting reply Koski. Par for your course I guess? Other gentleman have come up with conversation on how to safely stay within the rules, been able to
"discuss", "argue", and disagree on different aspects of the rule. Nothing personal. You....I just don't get it. If I offended you
by not wanting to paint a magazine blue, I am truly sorry.

Wow! I read the first two pages and then skipped to page 13. I sure hope the pages in the middle are not all about who is at fault if the gun goes bang on a supposedly empty chamber. (IMHO, the shooter is responsible for the safe operation of the firearm. The SO is a Safety. Never rely on your Safety Interlocks.) Anyway, I got to this thread in the first place while doing some research on IDPA. I love the idea and the want to start participating. To me it is all about shooting what you carry. Unfortunately, my carry is a 9x18mm Makarov IJ-70 so it does not qualify. My house gun is a Ruger P85 MK II. Since it is a 9x19mm it does qualify and will be what I shoot. There certainly other guns out there that are better suited to getting better scores during the competition, but I plan to shoot what I currently own. The idea is to make me a better able to handle a bad situation if it ever comes to that. The criticisms I have seen about the P85 so far are: -Stock Iron sites with little option for upgrade

Les Baer will charge you thousands of dollars for a TRS with fixed sights. A little model paint will help the contrast if you need it. -Decocks when the safety is place in safe -> you must shoot your first round DA That is what makes it a Stock Service Pistol. -Not the easiest gun to conceal The typical IDPA vest, safari jacket, BDU shirt, etc. will cover anything that will fit The Box. Go shooting. |

Sites -> I'll shoot it stock and see if contrast is an issue. I can shoot it just fine...static at the line at a non-moving target. Only shooting in a
match will let me know if it is going to be an issue.
The rest of my comments fall under the 'it is what it is' catagory. It is a very comfortable gun to shoot at the range. I can't wait to try it in a more mobile setting! Better to screw it up on an IDPA course than in the real world. I typically shoot it only in SA. I'll have to quit cocking it so that I can get some practice at DA on the first shot. Conceilment -> No issue for IDPA, but it is the big reason it is not my carry weapon. It is just too dang big for all but under a jacket in the winter, but I do love the 17 round magazine. To steer this back to the OP, these guns are relatively common. Mine has never FTF or FTE. It is completely dependable, reasonably accurate, comfortable to shoot, and inexpensive. ($180 for a barely used P85 with NO magazines. PO sold them during the Clinton Gun Ban when they were worth more than the gun. Easy fix now that the ban has expired!) Why is it that apparently no one shoots a Ruger P85 in competition? -Jim

I wouldn't say no one, there is a Ruger shooter in our club. But few if any high end competitors. I think it is because of the ergonomics or lack of same. The grip is one of the least comfortable I know, it feels like the gun is going to squirt out of my hand like a bar of soap. Trigger pulls are DA-SA crunch tick, which puts off a lot of people. Weights of pull are tough and I don't know of a gunsmith working on them or a widely circulated DIY. But yours has one advantage. You have it and can get into IDPA at no further cost. |

But yours has one advantage. You have it and can get into IDPA at no further cost.  That is exactly why it will be my starter gun! If nothing else shooting IDPA will either make me feel more comfortable with the gun or it will
expose the practical weakness of the gun. Either way shooting IDPA with it is a great idea.
Oak Ridge Shooters Association is running a match on the 5th of September near where I work (contractor). If I can get the family to come up here for Labor Day weekend I will be able to attend. It should not be too hard to convince them. I am camped on a lake and I have the boat up here with me. If they want to ski they have to come up here! BTW, what is 'DA/SA crunch tick'? -Jim |

I used to shoot my P95DC in IDPA, and it served me well. At one of the local matches here, one of the regulars shoots a P90DC. So the Ruger P-series semiautos
are not completely absent from IDPA.
The P95DC really fit my hand well, was comfortable to shoot with very low recoil for 9mm and has never had any failures of any kind. Yes, I eventually went with a CZ75, but primarily because it gave me more options, not because the P95DC was problematic in any way. So Jim, it's been a few months, did you shoot your Ruger? I started out with a P89DC and did pretty well with it. It was the first handgun that I bought
and has some sentimental value. I may shoot it in a match some time soon, for fun.
