Congrats to Kyle you kicked my butt really bad. I guess trying to shoot safe is not the road for me. Oh yea that was a kick a** side match score. I don't
think I could have shot your score in the match or the side match on my best weekend.

What a week! | ||

As I sit in the well-worn Laz-E-Boy here at the house, the reflections of the past week are nothing but the kind that put a big smile to the face.
With the exception of one lone competitor, the entire field was a delight to meet and see run the course through the shoothouse. I was in the SO crew for the shoothouse with Craig B., Matt and Mark McM., and Don B. - and had a blast. Gents, hats off to you for being a great bunch work with. Sorry I couldn't stay for Saturday, but you know what happened. Curt Nichols, of course, is on our hit list for that damnable Middle-Eastern rap music - Bones, did one of you guys put the CD in his car system and glue the door shut like we planned?? The match itself? Exactly what a national championship course of fire should be. There were some imaginative stages, one that ate my lunch, and others
that if you forgot what "feathering the gas pedal" was about and didn't pay attention to the little bump on the end of the barrel, you paid a
price. And from what I see with the points down match totals, quite a bit of "dinero" was expended....rivaling the amount spent on our federal
bailouts...

Congrats to Curt, Jerry, USSA, and the match staff. This was by far the best nationals yet! Tulsa was beautiful, I wish I could have seen more of the city. The
range was incredible, the stages were challenging, yet fair. I will definitely be back next year.

I was just looking at the results posted on the IDPA site. Stage 3 looks like it was a real killer. Are the COFs posted anywhere yet?

Stage 3 was the 'Standards' stage; 39 in 4 strings from 7 to 26 yards.

It was a fine match and USSA is a beautiful facility. They have a support staff there that is to be admired.
The stages were challenging but also very good looking and well set up. They added an extra bay so there were 9 bays instead of 8 this year. This upped the stage count and added to the fun.The stages boasted some fine moving targets and some challenging swingers, as well as some pretty clever situations and target alignment. They had 2 stages inside of a 360 degree shoot house. A sponsor provided a very nice flashlight for the competitors to use for the low light portion. The match ran smoothly and ended on time Thur and Fri, and ended early on Saturday. The banquet Saturday was on the 60th floor of a very impressive building complex. I just wish I wasn't sick all week due to some asthma complications. I did not get much time to see my friends as I was crashing out early every night, including the Saturday Banquet. Ted

To All Who Attended:
Thank you for coming to the Nationals and it was a pleasure to host all of you. The range staff continually pointed out how nice IDPA shooters are and they loved having you there. The match was a tremendous success thanks to them an incredibly talented and cordial group of Safety Officers. They're without a doubt the best in the business and we couldn't have done it without you (Bones, Curt is still looking for his CD). For the record, there were 12 DQ's and 7 FTDR's. All but three of these calls were for equipment related issues. It's plainly stated in IDPA that the sport is not an equipment race, and we intend to enforce that concept. The stages were certainly challenging, but I hope you all found them relevant, interesting and fair. We noted several areas with room for improvement and those will be incoroprated in the future. Again, thanks to everyone who attended and those who worked the event. I hope to see you all again next year. Jerry Biggs Assistant Match Director 2009 IDPA National Championship |

I really enjoyed the match. Lots of challenging stages, with a whole lot of "that doesn't look so hard," but then finding out that appearances
were deceiving. I personally really enjoyed the stage with the targets in the three cars (I remember thinking "How did they get the swinger to move that
fast...") and the one with the Dodge Neon where you either had to get out of the passenger seat and go around the back to engage the final targets or
launch yourself across to the driver's seat and shoot them while leaning out the window.
There were a couple of minor stage issues that I noted: mixed round counts for no compelling reason, a target we had to shoot on the move despite the presence of cover, and a stage with no cover anywhere yet we had to shoot some targets while stationary and others while on the move. My one big gripe was regarding the low-light stages. If your squad started the match on a bay after the Tunnel Rat stage, you would get to the shoot house stages before coming to Tunnel Rat. In the shoot house, you were given a chance to play and practice with the flashlight we were required to use (a First Light Tomahawk). There are multiple power output settings on the light, and it was extremely helpful to know how to use it to get the optimum performance. But if you started on a stage after the shoot house and up to the Tunnel Rat stage, you weren't allowed to familiarize yourself with the light this way. At the Tunnel Rat stage, you were simply shown what button to push to turn the light on, and not allowed to manipulate it any further. The result is that some competitors where provided with a competitive advantage over others simply because of where you started the match. For me, it didn't make all that much of a difference, since several mind-farts at other points in the match put me well out of a competitive finish, but inadequate knowledge of the light probably cost me 5-8 seconds in Tunnel Rat (the light didn't provide enough illumination to see the targets, so I finally had to give up and guess where they were). My point being is that match-required and -provided equipment shouldn't be utilized in a way that allows some competitors a competitive advantage over others. The required gear should be relatively stupid-proof so that everyone has a equal chance of using it efficiently (for example, the mini-mart stage required engagement of the first target with the match-provided Glock 17 - pick it up, shoot it at the target 2 yards away three times, put it down - simple and fair since even non-Glock shooters can pop a 2-yard-distant target three times very quickly). I discussed my concerns with the assistant match director, but he basically said that there was nothing he could do about it and it didn't merit a re-shoot. I didn't care to press the issue since jumping from 24th to 20th Place would be a Pyrrhic victory, but if it had cost me being in the top three, I would have been absolutely pissed (assuming that the guys who beat me had been given the competitive advantage described above). Beyond that, it was a far-and-away great match. Tough but fun stages, personable SOs, gorgeous range, fantastic weather, and a location with lots of amenities. And since my wife got to compete with me, as well as spend my birthday with me on Sunday, I call that a Win. I'm looking forward to next year's match.

Thanks for the congrats Cindy, and back to you SSR SS 1st place Good Job!
Hope we will see everyone again next year. Making Master at the Nationals is something I hoped to accomplish this year, but shooting the match early and having to wait and see if the score would hold up was excruciating. Thanks to John Abbot and his apple juice and lemonade I was able to make it through.

As the shooter you are always able to ask questions prior to beginning the stage including questions about equipment operation. I had never handled this particular flashlight before and made sure that i undersood what each button did before I started the stage. |
