What is your shotgun of choice |

Okay, I'm looking for a little info as to why you would choose a particular shotgun. I'm back and forth on Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 with ghost rings and blade sights, maybe sending a 870 to Wilson for dressing out. Do you like the accuracy of one over the other (slugs at distance), smoothness of action, action speed (is there really a difference) and any other idiosyncracies you like or don't like. Maybe I'll have to save up for a Benelli, I don't know. You have the floor. Thanks.

I like the tang safety of the Mossberg, being left handed, it is easier to reach. I think ghost rings are great. I ended up with a Benilli Nova and like it a lot, even though the safety is in the wrong place.

I prefer the safety of the Mossy's, but having said that. I always have my guns cruiser ready so I don't work the safeties hardly ever. Bout the only time I can think of needing one is in the aftermath, when the police are showing up and I want to set safe and put the gun down (or sling it) Shouldn't be something you need to deploy quickly, at least for most home defense scenarios. If you are doing some kind of houseclearing and want to be cocked and locked, I guess that would be cool, but then I'd would not want the safety on anyway. Ted Cover Me, I'm going Slo-Mo!

Personally I own a 590 Mossberg and do love the ambi-safety. However I lust after the Benelli pre-ban M1 Super 90. Recoil operated, it is not ammo sensitive, and there is no gas sysem to keep clean. But, the $900 price tag keeps me shooting my $195 Mossy, (bought out of the paper with 20 rounds through it.)

Okay, I get the idea of safety placement. What about action smoothness, slug accuracy at 50-75 yards ?

Mike - I got the Mossberg 590A1 based on cost. You can get a ready-to-run gun, with eight round mag, ghost ring sights and a bayonet lug
While the high-end 870s might arguably be better shotguns, I don't think there's a dime's worth of difference between the Mossberg 500 series and the Remington 870 Express series guns. I'm sure that there are a bunch of folks who'll disagree, though, since the 870s have an excellent reputation. The only thing I've had to do to the 590A1 is replace the mag spring. The factory one is pretty weak. Regards,

I say skip the pump and go for a self-loader. I prefer the Remington 1100/11-87, but the Winchester SX2 is a nice gun if you get one that is reliable.
A properly maintained self loader can be every bit as reliable as a pump. If you have a malfunction, it's just as fast to run the bolt as it is to pump, and no one short-strokes a self-loader! Add this: Less recoil, so it's easier to practice more can shoot more easily around cover or from prone can be faster on follow-up shots for some people |

I made my own HD 870, got a cheap used 870, then added my own stock, mag extension and sight.

Pete,
Nice front sight, what brand is it, and where did you get it? Thank you, Ken Reed |

Ken, they are Scattergun Tech sights (Wilson) but the rear is a 12ga and the front is a 20ga. The front was left over from a job that I did.
The rib was milled down about .030" to allow the sight to sit on the barrel and a wee bit of space for the JB Weld. I also pin the front in place and it's through a rib riser block. Forgot to add that the sight sets came from Brownells.

I'm going to get a new 870 this year and also I'm looking at the Remington 1000 Tac 4.
Is is a LE version of the 1100 that has a 22" vent rib barrel and a 4 shot extension. I like the vent rib over the ghost rings. Ted
