I know some people get upset when "real life" is mentioned, but here goes: If you were in a gun fight and you had a dud round, misfire, double-feed, etc., would you fix the problem or just lay down and wait to be shot? There is a real difference between a malfunction and a broken gun, whether you choose to recognize it or not. As a Vietnam veteran, I am well aware of documented cases of soldiers and Marines who were killed while trying to fix their broken M-16s. They stayed in the fight to the best of their ability (we were not issued back up pistols.) If anyone has a malfunction and quits without trying to fix it, that is just wrong. At our local matches if someone, usually a new shooter, has a malfunction they are informed that the clock is still running and to fix the problem and get back into the fight. If they can't fix it then DNF scoring is used. If they quit without trying to fix the problem, then FTDR.
