Garry,

The FTDR isn't for having a malfunction. Malfunctions happen on the clock all the time and the shooter pays the price with a poor time. The FTDR is for:

3. Not reloading to fire one more round because your
score will be better even with the miss.

Here are the three cases:

FTDR 1: Shooter simply ran empty but didn't reload and fire the final required shot.
FTDR 2: Shooter had a malfunction, cleared it, but didn't reload and fire the final required shot.
Case 3: Shooter had a dud round (revolver) but didn't reload and fire the final required shot.

Nobody's gun was broken.

What is the correct call?

And there is where we differ. Your call was Nobody's gun was broken. Both had equipment failures. In these cases, the shooter/shooters were able to clear the problem and could/or might be able to go on but what if they had not been able to clear the malfunction? Then the FTDR would be taken off the table even if the equipment problem happened at the same place/time in the CoF?

So that logically concludes that one style of equipment failure does not constitute a FTDR and another (less severe) equipment failure does constitute a FTDR....and that is the discussion (IMO). Because of the subjective nature of IDPA and the rulebook, seems that there might be a couple of ways to "what is the correct call". The rulebook already addresses that with equipment failures/problems that the scoring can/is changed. It does not diff. in the type or severity of the equipment problem.

Bottom line for me: would you have given a FTDR if the shooter had not been able to clear the equipment problem prior to the last shot?

If the answer is no, but one would give a FTDR for a equipment problem at the same moment in the CoF because the shooter was able to clear the malfunction, it this not inconsistant?

Thus taking this logically forward, all malfunctions except for safety (squips) must be cleared and shooter must continue the CoF otherwise a FTDR should be issued because just stopping would/could give them a better score.

In your cases, I would give a FTDR for #1 and PE for #2 and #3 because of the malfunctions....unless I can mindread and know that the reason for their actions were specific to a better score....(kind of like round dumping)

Good discussion Steve, thanks
Garry
