IDPA Headquarters would like to address the questions that have arisen here on the IDPA Forum as to how the Point system worked for this years Nationals Championship.

First, we would like to apologize for a major oversight in part of our preparations. We neglected to actually post the date that the entry selection would start. This led some competitors to believe that they had more time than they did to send in their applications. We recognize this error and rest assured we will not repeat this in the future. We are constantly trying to make the process faster and easier for our competitors (like the new online squading feature) and while there will be other bumps in the road, we will endeavor to eliminate or mitigate them in the future.

The timeline for this match (and anticipated baseline for future matches) is as follows:

  1. May 18th – first day entries are accepted at Headquarters
  2. May 31st – last day of qualifying matches. (next year this date will coincide with the entry date above)
  3. June 7th – entries were selected for the match based on points, then the reserved slots for random drawing were selected. This is the date that we should have published and did not. Entries received after this date went into the wait list pool along with the remaining entries that did not make the initial selection. For reference, if you had 3 points this year, you made it into the match. About 1/4 of the competitors with two points made it in the match based on points.
  4. June 7th – emails acknowledging selection went out. Ability to self squad was also based on points.
  5. June 11th – entries with 8 and above were allowed to squad
  6. June 12th – entries with 5 and above were allowed to squad
  7. June 13th – all remaining entries were able to squad
  8. June 18th – self squading was locked and all remaining entrants were squaded by HQ.

Entries that were not selected were placed on a waiting list. As spots open up, a replacement will be randomly drawn from the wait list. In the future we will keep the entries that came in before the selection date separate from the late entries. Entries will be drawn first from the on-time list, then from the late list.

As we go forward our Nationals selection will continue to evolve. Our new membership database and website will give us many more

tools and abilities to make the Nationals Selection process fair and equitable. Thank you for your time and patience while we complete this overhaul of the sport.

Also to answer the question as to stage count, there will be 16 stages in the match. the round count should fall between 225 and 275. I would recommend bringing at least 300.

"This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog."

~Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death.
