ave8er - this is exactly the point of this thread.  It is really sad they didn't post exactly how the Nationals would be filled.  I pulled the following off the site, and have comments on the highlightd portions.  My point is to illustrate where improvements could be made.

Entries must be POSTMARKED OR SHIPPED (NOT RECEIVED) NO EARLIER than May18th, 2012.
Any entries received prior to this date will not be considered for squadding until July 1st and only if there are openings left. SEND ENTRIES TO: IDPA CHAMPIONSHIP, 2232 CR 719, Berryville, Arkansas 72616.

Limited to 290 entries based on accumulated points. All applicants must be current IDPA members with a classification of Marksman or higher. No mention of a date when seeding squads starts, so competitiors would think there is time after the 31st of May to send in entries.

Match Directors for Sanctioned Matches will receive 1 point per Sanctioned Match.
Club Contacts will receive 1 point per club.
Competitors at any National Championship receive 3 points.
Competitors at any sanctioned match with 250 competitors or more receive 2 points.
Competitors at any sanctioned match with 249 or less competitors receive 1 point.
Points will only accumulate for matches attended between May 31, 2011 and May 31, 2012. I would suggest next year the date in green above be set after the last matches considered.  In this case, those that shot the match over Memorial day may have waited and not made the first squad seats.
Check with your match director to make sure that your results have been sent to IDPA HQ in an Excel format that includes your IDPA number so you get credit toward the points system to attend the IDPA National Championship.  I am not sure how practical this is?

I am not trying to be negative, but I think this needs lots of improvement.  A lot of people spent a lot of money competing in major matches to build points.  The spent money on entry fees, travel, lodging, ammo, food, and time off work - not to mention time away from family.  The selection process probably disappointed a few shooters.  I really feel for a nine point achiever not getting in.Ohwell

Again, I know the TT is busy and they volunteer.  This is one area perhaps they can weigh in on.  After all, they are representing the shooters.

My 2 cents.

One question: Is the information maddog quotes below posted somewhere? Maybe that can help bring the selection process front and center.
