I've never had to travel over 300 miles round trip to instruct a class, due to the sufficient availability of SOI's in my geographic area. When I teach locally in the metro, I charge $10 and that includes the packet from HQ for each student. That's for the full 8.5 hour class, including live-fire range exercises.

I guess one reason IDPA HQ has appointed the fairly ample number of SO Instructors is to make them readily available, as well as to keep costs down for those wishing to become certified SO's. 'Suppose if I had to travel a considerable distance, to the point of air fare and overnight hotels, the cost to the student would have to go up. In areas where IDPA is not yet well established, the SOI is likely to incur some significant costs to get to the distant location.
