Checking in a bit late on this one, but it caught my attention.

After trying all the different flashlight hold methods, this is the one I like the least.

I find that the light makes my gun very, very bright and easy to see. But because the brightness falls off exponentially with distance, a target at 4 times the distance of my gun is only 1/16th as brightly illuminated. My arm is about 2.5 feet long, so this would be a target only about 10 feet from my eyes.

The result is that the target, which is what I want to see and evaluate, is very hard to see because my eyes adjust to the brightness of my gun and my irises constrict.

Besides, tritium night sights are easy to see and therefore I don't really need to light up my gun with a flashlight.

Although no flashlight hold really grabs my affections, the best seems to be holding the flashlight next to my gun in my support side hand in a fairly normal flashlight hold. Alternatively, the Harries hold is ok for setups that don't require lots of movement.

Clearing my home or dealing with attackers in a dark public location are the most likely scenarios for using a flashlight. In all those scenarios I feel that any traditional hold method is less than good.

The very best seems to me to be a weapons mounted light. Some people are dead set against it, but for me I find it a very good solution. The coordination and technique of using a weapons mounted light is identical to normal gun handling. But a handheld flashlight is very difficult to coordinate with the gun sights, head movement, and body movement.
