Sandy sounds like our border folks now have information on who has a carry permits. You would be surprised how many folks on your side of the 49th think they can run around Canada with a firearm on their person because they have a CCW permit from the US. There is not much information that is not now shared between the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. thayt is not instantly available via computer these days.
If for some reason anyone reading this thread finds themselves at our border and remembers they have a firearm in the vehicle, ALWAYS declare it. You may have to return to the US to store the gun before crossing but it beats the alternative of facing a possible jail sentence, loss of your vehicle and or a fine if they find an undeclared firearm on your person or in your vehicle. In today's world of terrorist activity crossing the borders can be an exciting experience if you are not truthful when being questions by US or Canadian border folks. I have always found the US Border folks to be courteous, welcoming, thorough and professional.
Take Care
