Actually, IDPA did that for SSP guns and holsters up to 2005. It was a never ending pain in the butt, and was dropped in favor of specification based equipment rules.

If one is willing to dedicate staff to the problem, and publish a new list 3 or 4 times a year, yeah.... it is a workable idea. USPSA's production list works fine, unless you are one of the guys that wants to use a different gun, but the new list isn't coming at the right time for you.

I like the specification based rules. For example, it lets me build custom holsters and use them, which the holster list did not.  And it allows for holster modification which the list did not.
