I have a friend who does this periodically, he has told me that out of everything he has tested nothing has gone through more than 7 milk jugs. He has also
used wet newspaper stacked in a cardboard box, it also seems to work well but it creates a little more of a mess to clean up. hope this is of some help.

Water jugs will not reproduce the expansion that you would see in tissue

Balistic gelatin is a commonly accepted medium for bullet testing.

Remember the hullabaloo with the sinister "Black Talon" loads by Winchester years ago? I wanted to see what they expanded to, and found the perfect
medium in my dad's garden (just don't tell my mother that her lunch was used for ballistics testing!)
Two eggplants (the purple oversized pear shaped thingies that taste like crap, no matter what you do to them) lined up one behind the other, and two metro phonebooks for a backstop. Put Federal Hydrashocks into the top half of the veggie, and the Talons into the bottom of the veggies. Perfect expansion and no loss of metal (appreciably) that I could detect. The Black Talon petaled out perfectly - and if I can find it again, I'll post a pic. And for those that have never seen one in that condition, it's one mean mudder trucker of a round to do damage to the internals when applied properly in a defensive situation... A fitting use for a lousy tasting vegetable.

DTG - Water filled milk jugs stop most JHP's in the third jug, so if you line up 4 (or 5) you'll stop a JHP unless it comes out the side. With
FMJ's, all bets are off, they can go through a LOT of milk jugs.

Don't use a 32 gallon trash can filled mostly with water. They don't all stop, most certainly don't do this with it inside sitting on the floor of
your "gun room."
Robert Ray
IDPA HQ "This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog." ~Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death. |

Best is if you have a pool in your backyard, and you don't live in the city.

Steve Koski wrote:Uh, might want to rethink that one - bullets are known to skip off water and if it's not a 'cee-ment pond', you might have a larger variation of the 32 gallon trash can Robert eluded to.....

Cindy,
In olden times, folks shot bullets into pools all the time. Use the deep end, shoot straight in. Diving boards help. I agree that a kiddy pool would be a poor choice. Koski |

Blasting milk jugs is great fun, and educational too. If you've never done it, start saving them and go do it!
