Start with Glock 17, Springfield XD 9mm, and S&W M&P 9mm. They are the cheapest competitive pistols, both in price and in ammunition.

I also have a Sig P6 and would like to know if I could use it? I realize its mag capacity is small for a 9mm but...its something I already have. Just to get started. Thoughts?

You will have to make an extra reload versus tenshooters when an 18 shot stage comes up, but that is about the only drawback if you don't mind the crunch-tick of a DA-SA gun.

That way you can shoot the heck out of it and get totally tuned into your ("practice/training") carry gun without any worry of a well worn part failing on your ("for real") carry gun at a really bad time.
