Posts: 2217 (06/23/09 16:14:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None While driving through Maryland and Virginia, I noticed that at some intersections, they took out perfectly good stop signs and lights and and put in one-way, circle j*#ks (my initial terminology for them) with yield signs at the various points of the compass and planters in the middle. On the way back, it occurred to me that they might be more accurately called Obama circles, as they probably look good on paper to someone who doesn't actually use them, seemingly serve no practical purpose other than to slow down real progress and no doubt were installed at the tax payers' expense. With some creative land-scaping, they could probably make them look just like the Obama "O" for when the "One" is riding in Air force One and looks down at the masses Kevin Schlier Poconos, PA http://www.brcv-gun.org

For the most part, those circles predate traffic control devices and sometimes, the cars themselves. Cover Me, I'm going Slo-Mo!

Posts: 36 (06/23/09 18:22:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	down south we refer to these as "roundabouts"...they are used a lot overseas and are engineered well...according to my father in law, some in saudi arabia may be as big as 1/2 mile across...around here it is just a way for our street dept to think they are smart and screw up traffic...they installed one at the end of our road and my GMC 2500 crew cab pulling a boat does not go around it well...so i just go the wrong way to get to my street. They allow the traffic to flow faster and smoother than traffic lights. Yes there is a learning curve to them, but once you have them mastered they are a breeze. However, PennDot in their infinite wisdom didn't figure out that the designs submitted would only accomodate a 45' tractor trailer on one of the circles, not the current 53' behemoth trailers that the local paper company runs. Install, watch the curbing be chewed up, tear up and re-engineer the thing at taxpayer expense. Other than the stupidity of the traffic engineers, they work pretty well. Just don't call them "roundabouts" in New England, you'll be strung up as a traitor.
