The rules prohibit the full length dust cover as a modification. Is the STI dust cover considered a modification or is it a legal factory installation? The barrel length is just 4.15" so I cannot see that the dust cover gives any significant edge over other full length pistols. STI advertises the barrel length as 4.15, but that's the slide length. The barrel is a standard Commander length, 4.25" which would make it too long. STI does not advertise it as being IDPA legal at all.. Bob Iraq needs a Constitution. Lets give them ours. It was written by some pretty smart guys, and it's worked very well for 213 years, but as of Black Tuesday, we won't be using it any longer.

The barrel length would be a nasty surprise as STI says it is only 4.15" in length. The full length dust cover rule should not apply here (in my opinion) as the gun itself is far from full length (7.75" versus 8.75" length limit) and full weight (33.5 oz versus 41.0 oz weight limit). sasu

The dustcover would cause many a match director's eyebrows to go up. There is nothing in the rules that says "dustcovers are illegal ... unless the slide is under 8.75 inches" or "dustcovers are illegal ..unless it doesn't give you a competitive advantage" What the rulebook DOES say is "EXCLUDED Modifications (NON-Inclusive list): 1. Full length dust covers of carbon or stainless steel. A lot of match directors are going to see that gun and say that is a full length dustcover. You can argue it's a light rail or it doesn't give you a competitive advantage or that it's shorter than a government model all you want. But a large percentage of MDs are going to say "The dustcover extends the full length of the slide. It's not legal." And the bottom line is... MD have final say. If they say it's illegal, then you can't shoot it in their match. If you strongly believe your position is valid, I encourage you to submit this question to HQs and get a ruling. I could see the point if the pistol in question did not have a frame extending all the way to the front when it comes from the factory and a new aftermarket frame is used to replace it. Sasu, It seems the only way this dust cover/light rail would be allowed is if it is not made of carbon steel. Is that a polymer frame? If so you may be good to go on the frame. Then there is still the issue about guide rod and barrel length. No matter what the web site says. Stick a quib rod down the barrel, mark it and measure it. I believe that is your barrel length on a semi-auto pistol. OK, I will wait for the IDPA rules to change for the better and use my other 45 ACP guns until then. It is just such a shame as this gun is meant to be carried and has a high cap magazine. There is a full length Tactical version for the competitively bent shooters. I guess the full length dust cover prohibition will have to go soon as so many guns are now made with an equipment rail. If the STI 4.15" barrel is really longer than the factory specification states then I can forget using it in IDPA. My traditional 1911s and M&P45 will hooray on that as they will get more range time. My first name is Sasu so I do sign my posts. It was a standard Commander length. 4.15" is the length of the slide. I wish STI would advertise it right. The barral can be cut back to 4.15". That's what I had done to the Ranger and it actually looks very good. The recoil master really needs to go anyway, IMHO, in favor of a full length guide rod. That only leaves the dust cover to deal with. I would also be interested in what the biggies say about it, since it seems they tend to re-write the rule book depending on how they feel that day..
