1911 9MM Mag Recomendations |
Lead | |
|
Hi all, Looking for recomendations for a 9 or 10 round mag for a 9 MM 1911 (Les Baer) pistol. I'm interested in the ones with the spacer in the front,
setting the round to the rear of the mag. Anybody have any experience with these? (The owner is having problems with the bullet nose diving into the feed ramp
from a slide lock reload.) We are hoping this mag will alleviate this problem.

My wife and I have used the 10 round Metalform all season last year. Not a single solitary problem. Not in the matches, nor in practice. We both shoot STI
Trojans and the magazines performed flawlessly. I have had the same luck with their 9 rounders as well, but prefer the 10.

Thanks for that input Larry. The mags the owner is having problems with are Metalforms. The gun is on the way back to Les Baer for diagnosis. We suspect the
feed ramp angle may be off a bit. I was hoping a mag change might alleviate the problem.

Bob I use the Wilson ETM 9mm mags. Have never had a failure of any kind, and it goes to slide lock everytime. These are 10rd mags. Have a lot of friends who
use Tripp mags with equal success. I use them in a Springfield 9130 9mm. Good luck.

Thanks Herb. The gun owner also has a pair of the ETMs. Same problem with them. It clearly appears to be a gun problem. Thanks again for the reply.

I use the Metalform as well, but since there are two types from Metalform, you have to make sure they are the ones with the spacer in front. The magazines with
the spacer in back.. some work in my gun, some not so well.
I borrowed some 10-round Cobras from a friend at the last stage of a match, and well, I should have tried them out AFTER the match. They turned my gun into a single-shot pistol. Bang. click. taprackBANG. click. taprackBANG. It was annoying, but it was also my fault. I know my gun's a little persnickety about certain things. Funny thing, he has the same gun I do, and they work flawlessly for him. You can get the 9-rounders with the front ramp from Brownells (they call them the Springfield magazine) they have a dimple along the front edge of the magazine (the front ramp) and it makes a huge difference. Here's a link: http://www.brownells.com/...etail.aspx?p=20448&title= Hope that helps. Melissa |

I use the 10 round Cobra mags from Tripp Research and have not had any problems with them (at least none that I remember). With Metalform I have had problems. My most common problem with the Metalform is, if I chamber a round and then eject that mag (a "Barney mag") the top round in the mag has also stripped loose and will fall out. |

Been around this hill a few times. I've tried the Metalform. No joy. My Nowlin seems to work best with McCormick 38 Super. Unfortunately, those are no
longer being made.

Is anybody tuning their mags? Or cleaning them?
I have 2 9mm 1911s. Both parts guns that run pretty well with Colt 9 round mags. My #1 mag just started not slide locking every time. I tweaked the follower a little and will test as soon as possible. I've been shooting Revolvers and Glocks too much I guess. All you do is brush out the chambers once in a while. Bill |

Bubba,
If I had a gun that wouldn't lock back on that many different mags, I think I'd be looking at the slide stop.. Bob
Iraq needs a Constitution. Lets give them ours. It was written by some pretty smart guys, and it's worked very well for 213 years, but as of Black Tuesday,
we won't be using it any longer.

One cure I found with my Trojan was to go to a lighter recoil spring. Once I did my slide consistantly locked back after the last round. Before the change
some mags worked...some didn't.

That's the best thing about 1911's. None of the mags work with all of the guns. You can always tinker and spend more money on mags that might work.

I took my 1911 9mm to the local IDPA match last weekend. It had been running pretty good here at home. Not at the match. Malfunction Junction.

I've never had any issues with the Tripp Research 10 rounders.
