I'm new to IDPA and a SO mentioned something about "suppressive fire".
What exactly is suppressive fire? I couldn't see it in the rulebook.
Thank you in advance

He was probably joking about someone shooting alot and not hitting anything.
Suppresive fire (which you won't see in IDPA) is a heavy volume of shooting meant to keep an adversary pinned behind a piece of cover, to keep them from shooting back, normally while someone advances on them. |

I saw it in an IDPA match. A long time ago. The stage basically went that you flung 6 rounds in the general direction of the bad guy while sprinting to cover.
Then you re-engaged from cover. IIRC, the scenario was worded like you were out in the woods alone. Not in a crowded shopping center. Fun as I recall.

In the old CoF book (IIRC) there was a stage such as this. There was a big disclamer that it was for a rural area.

Thanks guys,
Can "suppressive fire" still be incorporated in a COF nowadays? Cuz, the SO was planning to. Raul |

It might not fly at a sanctioned match, but no reason you couldn't do it at a local match.

Cracked open the old CoF book. PP 190-191
IDPA SC-0025 Keep Their Heads Down- (Based on an actual incident) Course Designer Wayne Fernandez. Scenario: You are off-duty and as you are hiking down a wooded lane three felons you have previously arrested and jailed appear in an ambush. All three have drawn weapons and are beginning to point them at you. You notice cover some distance away, and you offer suppressive fire as you head for this cover. Safely behind this cover you can dispense with the Threat. Procedure: Begin with four rounds only in your handgun. On the audible start signal, the shooter will move toward cover at position P2 while providing suppressive fire at Targets T1-T3. Upon reaching cover, the shooter will perform a slide lock reload and engage T1-T3 with two rounds each. Note: The concept of suppressive fire is a valid one if done under rural conditions. All care must be taken however, to assure that no shots leave the range. Thus this stage may not be suitable for some facilities. The CoF description has three targets side by side with P1 right in front. There is a line of movement to cover of 7 yards distance. P2 is located to the right and behind (at about a 30 degree angle) from P1. ===== Not my kind of stage. Ted
