OBSERVED First Match |
Lead | |
|
I observed my first IDPA match Saturday, and I'm hooked without firing a shot. I had at least a dozen or more people (out of 50) trying to get me to shoot,
offering guns, ammo, holsters, instruction, etc. I had my carry gun in my truck (XD40 Sub), but loaded with high dollar defense ammo, plus it's really not
the ideal IDPA gun. I think I learned more just by watching the first time. At every stage, someone called me up to the group and explained the layout of the
CoF, and made sure I knew what was going on, and answered any questions I had. I was just plain impressed. I came home and ordered what I needed to shoot with
them next month, and be IDPA legal. I'm sure I'll still be a bundle of nerves, like 99% of you guys were at your first shoot, but it won't be near
as bad as going in without a clue what to expect. Barring the unforseen, I'm there on the 4th Saturday next month!

Thanks, David, I'm sure it is very addicting. You know, after the first 10-15 minutes of watching, I was like "I can't do this"...but the
longer I stayed the more I realized that I could do it. And, I think I could do it fairly well after a match or two under my belt. I saw guys shoot non threats
and just laugh it off-they were just there to have fun. That's what impressed me the most. Sure, there were a couple of ultra-competetive people there, but
it seemed like they enjoyed it less than everybody else. I'm there to have fun, and if I improve my shooting skills (and I'm sure I will over time)
then that's an added bonus!

I'll be ready Blair, thanks. I just have to keep telling myself not to take it too seriously and have a good time, and mainly to be safe and learn from my
mistakes.
Sorry to keep editing my posts, I keep forgetting to sign my name... Steve |

Steve, "cheat" like the rest of us - go into your profile and create a 'signature' with your name. I know mine, and I don't have to type it often!

Thanks Cindy and Greg. I sold my reloading equipment almost 25 years ago, along with most of my 17 handguns. I've started buying a few new ones in the last
6-8 months, and I couldn't believe how much guns had gone up, until I started buying ammo for them! I'm hiding money back (yep, married) to buy one
more pistol (for now), and then I guess I'll have get back into the reloading. From what I've seen, reloading has changed quite a bit for the easier in
the last 25 years, but it sure hasn't gotten any cheaper...

Steve,
Don't worry about shooting the "ideal" IDPA gun. Just shoot what ya got! Koski |

Steve Koski,
I do have a couple of more favorable IDPA guns than the XD40 subcompact (XD9, SR9, and about to buy a .45), but I intentionally had the sub in my truck so I wouldn't be tempted to shoot. I really wanted to just watch and ask questions. I feel liked I learned alot more that way without having the added pressure of shooting without knowing what's going on. And now, I'm ready. I may not hit the first target, but it won't be because of a lack of practice... Steve |

I too am hooked by this. I am not new to competitive shooting (shot competitive sporting clays, skeet, and highpower a lot over the years), so match pressure
was no big deal, but you always have butterflies when it's you first at bat in a new league.
I also have been favorably impressed with the friendliness, lack of pretentiousness, and overall pleasant atmosphere in the clubs that I have shot in (Pickaway County Sportsmen, Clinton County Sportsmen, Oxford IWLA, and Big Darby Creek here in Ohio). Even met some really cool Mountaineers and it sounds like their state match is a must do. To make it even harder :^) I prefer to compete with wheelguns. Jose |

Jose,
You should use a pair of 4" 500 mags with speedloaders. That would ROCK! Steve Koski |

Steve Koski wrote:He he, normally I shoot SSR with a Model 65 but sometimes I take either my 3" Model 29 or 4" Model 629 Mountain Gun. I shoot 44 Magnums loaded down to 44 Special power level but it's funny to see people's faces when they pick up the brass.

Welcome to IDPA! Your XD40 Sub is an ideal carry gun for IDPA all you need is a holster and mag pouch thats legal for IDPA and that's it.

I shoot a Walther PPS 9mm - compact. It is my personal defense weapon and it is "all i got".
Some of the longer distant COF present a challenge, but it will only make me a better shooter. I feel any perceived shortcomings of my gun can be overcome by practice and skill. "Listen to the rookie talk."

Thanks for the welcome, Karl, but I won't be shooting the XD in my first match next Saturday. It's just a little too short for me on the long shots,
and I really just have it for my concealed carry gun. I'll be making my first attempt with an SR9, if I get to shoot at all. I just broke the 2 small toes
on my left foot, and I'm OK on level ground with flip-flops or sandals, but shoes or boots are out of the question right now. Hopefully I can heal up and
get some practice in next week and be ready to go for Saturday. Wish me luck!

Well, September's match didn't happen for me. Still limping around here in pain guys, mouth still watering to get in my first match...will find out
next Monday if I have to have surgery on the foot or not. The doc said if I would have come back in right after it happened I would be OK now, but of course I
waited almost 3 weeks after the initial diagnosis to go back...thought it would heal itself.
