Is it proper to first grab a full mag from your belt and bring it up to the weapon, release empty mag into palm and insert full mag all in one motion, and then return empty mag to pocket or waistband, or can you release the empty mag before going for the full mag , then as your hand drops down to belt line you drop the empty into your front pocket or waistband then grab full mag from carrier? I was shooting a pretty good match Saturday, and then I came to a couple of stages where I just kind of lost focus and made a handfull of small mistakes. I wasn't particularly tired, just got lazy I suppose.

I've been shooting at 3,7 & 15 yards with my Colt 45. Yesterday I tried some shooting at 25 yards and the impact was a about 12" high. I was somewhat disappointed. Even though I'm "new" to handgun shooting I've thought that perhaps its my "technique".

I went back to shooting at 15 yards and found that I was shooting 6-8" high. I than "gripped" the pistol tighter and found that the impact was POA. Im doing something...

Hello, All:

I am fairly new to IDPA shooting, having attended about 10 practice matches with a club in Conroe, TX. I shoot a Sig P229 Equinox .40, which I love. The wooden grips are a bit thick for my hands, causing me to slightly rotate the pistol in my firing hand in order to press the magazine release while reloading. Would it be better to work the slide release with my non-shooting hand during reloading or is there something else I am missing?

When people speak of draw times such as 1.5, 2.0 secs, or whatever time, is this from the timer to a hit in -0 ring at 7 yds? Or, is it from timer to just the first shot, regardless of accuracy? I want to work on my times and will track them, but wondering the conditions under which people discuss draw times?

Also, what is a respectable reload time for a MM or SS from slide lock (emergency reload) from the end of one round to the next fired round? I do realize there are more...

Here is a little tip.. Say your at a stage and end up behind a barricade (Bianchi) with two targets down range at 20 yards. There is one target on either side of the barricade. The stage calls for you to shoot two rounds on the left target from the left side, then two rounds on the right target from the right side. You only have three rounds left in the gun and will need to reload as necessary. Do you think it is faster to fire two rounds on one target, then fire one more round,...

Now that I have a timer I'm wondering if anyone has a list of generally accepted times for basic maneuvers such as draw and shoot two to body- one to head, two to body, mozambique, etc. I know there is the Qualifier which I have not shot yet and didn't want to specifically practice for it although the speed for some of those combinations is what I'm looking for.

I know I could shoot and do the actual scoring for the 3 Qualifier stages, and compare to the different...

Weak Hand Improvement Advice Needed

I am absolutely terrible at "Weak Hand" strings ... even at just 5 yards.
I'd probably do better, or at least just as well, if I just "hip shot" with my left hand w/o even looking at the sights.
Out of 10 rounds (9mm) I may get one dead center in the bullseye and the rest sprayed all over within an 12-18" radius.

Next Match is in 10 days and I'd really like some help with things to practice, besides just pouring a ton of rounds downrange....

On Stage 1 of the Qualifier for example, where you are moving between 3 targets, is it best to keep eyes on front sight between T1-T3 or, to refocus on each new target and then pick up front sight again? I read where shooting a row of plates it was faster to keep eyes on front sight while moving from plate to plate and it seemed to work for me, but not sure about this situation where targets are known, but set further apart such Stage 1 Qual. Man I've wanted to try this for a long time, but I would like to shoot a wheel gun, a Smith 686 3-1/2 7 shot. No one is currently shooting a revolver, should I even try? And if I do would I be able to shot 3 rounds of 7 and 1 round of 6?

Well, my junior shooter needs something to do in the garage/backyard this summer for practice. He is getting GOOD quickly (like most youngsters) and I think an airsoft would really help him (and hopefully keep him out of mom's hair!). He is shooting Glocks, can anyone recommend a good airsoft, hopefully a blowback version? Appreciate any reviews/recommendations. Thanks,

So I shot my first match today! I have shot benchrest for years and I thought new match nerves was a thing of the past. Well, that was the first problem. I knew as soon as I saw the amount of people and the amount of range equipment, I was in trouble.

Just curious: do you carry your spare magazines with bullets facing forward or to the rear? I have seen both at matches, and can see how both methods might have advantages. I have always carried mine bullets to the rear, probably because my first instructor did it that way. How do y'all carry them and why that way?

Going with the concept that any quality trigger time, is good time. Would anyone disagree that spending time using a rimfire (MKII) for extended practice session is a bad idea? I'm not saying exclusively, but given that lack of readily accessible ammo in 40 cal variety, getting tactics pratice done with the G27 and supplemented with the Ruger, would I be handicapping myself?

OK, so I'm being kind of cheap, but target grade ammo is getting REAL hard to find in these parts...

My 16 year old daughter is interested in shooting IPDA with me. My baby Glock 27 would be more kick than I would want her to have to deal with. She shot a G19 (rented) last time we went to the range, and liked it. My short list right now is a G19, XD Service, XD Compact, or S&W MP. I haven't ruled out something in .380 like a Bersa or Walther.

What would you guys & gals suggest?

Have heard people talking about loads that produce a lot of "smoke" and look for ways to reduce it. Never saw it as much of a problem though. It caught me yesterday at our clubs BUG match.

We shoot indoors and for flashlight stages cut the lights which also cuts off the ventilation system. Just for the few seconds the stage is being shot, lights back on the fans start too. Course of fire was 5 shots around the barricade strong hand. reload , 5 more weak hand other side...
